 | | | Other options June, July, August Due to the severity of the Saharan summer we do not run full length treks during these months. As an alternative we organise stays of 1 or 2 nights in the desert, leaving the Sahara during the heat of the day for short, local excursions before returning for another short trek, setting up camp and spending another night beneath the stars. Sample itinerary: - On the day of your arrival in Douz you will travel into the Sahara in the late afternoon, make camp, relax, cook, eat, enjoy the sunset and night sky.
- In the morning you will travel back to the village of Ghlissia by a different route, for a guided tour of a place of local interest such as the market in Douz. It is a market held every Thursday for local people rather than the tourist trade, bustling and interesting, and providing an atmospheric taste of local life. The regular traders for the tourists are in the souk everyday.
- In the afternoon you will return to the Sahara, travelling with your camels to a different camping place, for your 2nd night sleeping under the stars.
- The 2nd and final day will follow the same pattern as the first, leaving the desert before the heat is too much for another guided tour, such as a visit the ruins of the old town at Kebili. The new town is also an interesting place to wander round at leisure. There is a large local market there on Tuesdays.
- From there you can be driven to your chosen destination to enjoy the rest of your holiday.
| | | | All our treks can be combined with visits to other places of interest in southern Tunisia which, in addition to 1 or 2 nights in the Sahara, will take you to places of interest such as the oasis town of Tozeur, the Star Wars set at Nefta, the troglodyte dwellings at Matmata or to Tataouine, again with a Star Wars set, part of which is being converted into a hotel. You will stay each night at a hotel in that particular locality before moving on to the next town of interest. December In Douz, the Festival of the Sahara, a celebration of Bedouin culture, is an annual event which attracts visitors from all over the world. The 4-day event held in late December is a worthwhile spectacle and an exciting way to spend Christmas, with the option of combining this with one or two nights in the Sahara. A Sahara trek is a novel way to celebrate birthdays, graduations, special occasions, or simply to take time out. Prices Prices for groups of 5 or more, lengths of stay, treks by 4x4, transfers from other airports, and requirements other than those shown, are available on request.
