Arabic and French are the main languages, but some English, German and Italian are also spoken. Tunisians are a relaxed and friendly people, proud of their peaceful country with its low crime rate, and visitors will receive a warm welcome.

Tunisia is also a Muslim country and locals ask only that visitors respect their religion and customs, and, of course, Nature itself.

Advice can be obtained from the
Foreign and Commonwealth office website.

We are based in Douz, a peaceful, bustling small town. Far from large centres of population, it has an intriguing mix of the modern and traditional, with an internet café, a relaxed café culture and no supermarkets. Local tradesmen are keen to draw tourists into their shops, but unlike more developed tourist centres, they frequently offer conversation and tea (for which they do not charge), the prices are low and the shopping unpressurised. The crime rate is also very low and shops are often left unattended during the afternoon siesta, and on the eve of the weekly market stalls are erected and left fully stocked overnight.

Dress codes: traditionally shorts are not worn, and shoulders and arms are covered. Women also cover their heads. Many tourists ignore these conventions and whilst locals are extremely tolerant, they appreciate visitors showing respect for their customs. We actively encourage this, but you will find that covering your head provides a valuable comfort factor.

Seasons

Saharan summers are considered too severe for European visitors. As a result, treks are not available between early June and late August.
